The quiet ticking was what woke him up.
He practically floundered out of sleep, jerking slightly as he suddenly realized he was awake, and then began thrashing a little in panic when he realized his movement was restricted. He thought for a moment that he was tied up--but no, just tangled up in the bedsheets, as he rolled out of them and hit the floor with an "oof".
He simply laid there for a moment, trying to remember. Where was he? Why was he here?
...Who was he again? He had a feeling he'd been told, but he couldn't remember.
Footsteps sounded, and he looked up just in time to see another teen appear, standing in the doorway and looking him critically. "So you're awake, Kudo?"
"Kudo..." He murmured. "....Is that my name...?"
The other simply watched him for a moment, before sighing and walking forward to kneel in front of him, helping him sit up. "Figures you'd forget again....yes, your name is Kudo Shinichi. Mine is Kuroba Kaito and you'll be staying here until you're better."
Kudo Shinichi. That's right, that was his name...he'd been told it before. He couldn't...remember how, or who, but the memories blinked back little by little from yesterday...or whenever the last day had been. He'd been somewhere else, yes, than wandered around in this city, and then...something about shooting? Then he'd fainted. Strnagely enough, he couldn't remember the faces of anyone he'd seen that day...he knew he'd seen people, but who they were eluded him.
Well, if they were important, they'd come see him. "O-Okay...I'm...not a bother, am I...?"
The teen - Kaito, apparently - gave him a look, before simply smiling. "No, you're fine. Here, you want anything to eat or drink? I'll get it for you, you just stay in bed. Yesterday was a stressful day for you."
"I can remember a little of it..." Shinichi replied as he climbed back into the bed. Yes, the bed was nice and soft, and helped with the fact that he was abruptly sore all over. It'd felt like he'd run into a concrete wall....several times. What had he done yesterday? Whatever it was, it had hurt.
Kaito smiled at him and pulled the covers up to tuck him in. "Don't think about it too much. Now, just wait right there, I'll get you some tea and toast." Suiting actions to words, Kaito padded out of the room.
Shinichi snuggled into the blankets, turning his gaze to the ceiling once the other was gone. He didn't like this...was he doomed to forget everything that happened day to day? Well, not totally...the memories of yesterday, or at least those that had managed to form solidly, had returned. So he wasn't entirely amnesiac, either that or his ability to remember things had already started to heal.
But, if so, why couldn't he still remember anything past yesterday...?
...Maybe he just needed a little more time. Time was the only thing that healed head trauma like this.
The question was...did he have that time?
No answer magically appeared, and Shinichi rolled over with a sigh.
He'd just have to wait and see.
---
The afternoon came and passed, and Shinichi soon learned that he was in the home of Kaito and his mother, who had returned later that day. Apparently something with a sniper had gone down, and out of worry, Kaito had taken him home so that they couldn't find him through the hospitals. No one had seen where Kaito had taken him, so he was safe here.
He hoped that was the case. The teen and his mother were so friendly and nice, Shinichi didn't want anything to happen to them just because he was here.
He spent the evening alternately reading and talking with Kaito whenever the teen was around. He had a natural ability to simply be cheerful and smooth away Shinichi's worries as they talked, until Shinichi had nearly forgotten the whole situation and was just discussing things like physics and soccer with the other teen, and was only reminded of it when he stumbled in the discussion because he couldn't remember what exactly he was trying to say, or had forgotten a certain fact that he had been about to rely on and realized he couldn't remember.
It was annoying, but Kaito always just smiled and moved the conversation on.
And so, as he laid in the guest bed and stared at the ceiling late at night, he silently prayed that he did have enough time to simply be here and heal. He liked it here...staying until he remembered everything was not a bad prospect at all.
Please just let everything stay like this for a little while... Was his last thought before he drifted back into sleep.
